During and after World War II approximately one million women from occupied or war-torn countries married American GIs. Shukert and Scibetta, both daughters of war brides, have created a thorough and engrossing history, interviewing more than 2000 of these courageous but often overlooked womenThe brides are from Britain and other English-speaking countries, from Europe and from the Far East. Some recount tales of hardship and culture shock, restrictions and bureaucracy, bigotry, parental opposition, and at times, abuse. But many women describe contented marriages and the tales of wedding gowns made from parachutes and cakes made from hoarded rations create a fascinating and moving portrait of a vanished era.
