The Center for Oral and Public History at California State U., Fullerton, publishes the remembrances of Japanese American men and women who practiced medicine in the US detention centers where they were banished after Pearl Harbor. The excerpts of oral histories collected by teams organized by the Japanese American Medical Association tell how those who provided health care at the camps made do in harsh conditions with inadequate resources. The collection also opens a window on the tellers' early family lives, their professional training, and their return to civilian life. The interviewees were in different stages of their medical careers in 1942?they were established physicians, new doctors, pre-med students, and medical students in training. Several also served in the military and provide insights into the experience of Japanese American medical personnel in World War II. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
