Any prisoner-of-war deep inside the Nazi Third Reich who attempted to escape deserved the highest praise for courage and determination. Remarkably, Jimmy James took part in no less than twelve attempts including the Great Escape, and passed through several camps including Flossenburg and Dachau. Even when recapture carried the prospect of execution he refused to accept captivity, accepting the consequences of unsuccessful escapes, such as a death sentence from Himmler that was never carried out, and solitary confinement.
