Counterparts

Gargan walks the perilous high wire as he journeys across Europe and wakes to find himself the victim of ritual self-mutilation. Adam Midwinter, an actor who has gone to Paris in search of work, struggles to establish an identity both on and off the stage. Each man remains divided within himself, though he cannot explain why. And the women in their lives--Jenni, a poet; Su, a tightrope groupie; and Rada, a waitress from Yugoslavia--add to the confusion. So does Alexia Pryce, an heiress whose death remains a mystery. Not until they converge on Berlin--and on the wall which separates the city's two halves--do Gargan and Midwinter understand the role each plays in the other's life.
